A Project for Colleges, Universities, and Conservatories

BesenArts is pleased to announce a new educational and performance residency project created by the internationally-acclaimed violist Hsin-Yun Huang. The project revolves around works for solo viola and small chamber ensemble commissioned by Ms. Huang from Steven Mackey and Shi-Hui Chen, and the Bach Brandenburg Concertos.

Over the course of several days on campus, Ms. Huang will rehearse either the new works and one of the Brandenburg Concertos with students and/or members of the faculty, leading to a public performance at the end of the residency. Each program will open with one of the solo sonatas or partitas of Bach. During the course of her stay, Ms. Huang, a recognized master teacher, will offer master classes and coaching sessions for viola students, chamber ensembles, and the string department. Both composers are available to take part in these residencies, offering master classes and workshops for composition students. Mr. Mackey is available to conduct his work. (Ms. Chen’s work does not require a conductor.)

The Brandenburg Concerto will be selected in coordination with the music faculty according to the resources at hand and the desired educational result. In turn, the solo viola work will be chosen by Ms. Huang to maximize the sweep of the overall program.
